Sony Music Entertainment (SME) has announced its plan to acquire a 23.29% stake in GungHo Online Entertainment, the developer known for the hit game Puzzle & Dragons. The acquisition, valued at approximately ¥28.64 billion (around $182.5 million), will make SME the largest shareholder of GungHo. This strategic move is part of a new capital and business alliance aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two companies. Following the acquisition, SME and GungHo will explore joint development and operation of mobile, console, and PC games, as well as promotional collaborations around GungHo's existing titles. Additionally, they are considering new game projects that could leverage intellectual properties from SME and its subsidiaries. Despite the significant stake, GungHo will retain its operational independence as a publicly listed company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. SME has a history in the gaming industry, particularly through its Aniplex division, which has published successful mobile games such as Fate/Grand Order. This acquisition could signal a new era of collaboration in the gaming sector, particularly in the mobile gaming space where both companies have established a strong presence.
